Step-by-step guide to deep cleaning your house
July 16, 2024Be honest, do you even remember the last time you deep cleaned your home? You may be wiping down your kitchen counters after cooking, or find yourself sprucing up your bedroom every once in a while, but this is not enough to fend off the nasty – and often harmful – bacteria and germs that are lurking in your home!
We encourage you to drop the “out of sight, out of mind” attitude when it comes to keeping your home clean, as the number of germs found in your bed, bath and beyond will likely shock you. Instead, it’s recommended that you deep clean your home thoroughly at least 3 to 4 times per year.
In this blog, we breakdown a complete guide to cleaning your bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen, dining room and living room, but before you get started, we recommend making a game plan of which rooms you’ll tackle and when. Unless you’re superhuman, it will take quite a bit of time to deep clean every room, so it’s best to break this up over a weekend or a few days.Don’t forget to take stock of your cleaning tools before getting started, while making sure you’re equipped with UltraGrime® Anti-Bac Clothwipes which are designed to kill 99.99% of bacteria and can be used in every room of your house!
1. The bedrooms
The first thing to do in the bedroom is to completely strip the bedding, including duvet covers, bed skirts, and shams, and throw them all into a hot wash – ideally, you should be washing and changing your bedding at least twice a month. Don’t forget about your pillow cases too as these can harbour up to 3 million bacteria which is 17,000 times more than the average toilet seat!
Take care of your duvet and pillows
We also encourage you to wash your duvet and pillows at least a few times per year. Many manufacturers will recommend you take these items to a professional dry cleaner, but if you have a big enough washing machine then you can follow the label instructions and wash your pillows and duvets from the comfort of your own home.
Clean your mattress
You may not want to read this, but mattresses are no stranger to bacteria due to the build-up of skin flakes, food particles and fungi. In fact, a mattress that is just 7 years old can be home to more than 16 million colony-forming units of bacteria!
Top tip: We recommend you vacuum both sides of the mattress to remove the nasty dust mites and skin flakes, before using a stain remover to get rid of any obvious spills and blotches. Then, you can lightly sprinkle baking soda over your mattress which can help alleviate any odours and moisture. After spraying the mattress with essential oils or a scented spray of your choosing, your mattress will be looking and smelling brand new!
Give your wardrobes a thorough dusting
Your wardrobes and other storage units are often overfilled and rarely cleaned, meaning there is likely an abundance of dust amongst your clean clothes and other belongings. While deep cleaning your bedrooms, you should use this time to empty these units, declutter, and give them a thorough dusting and cleaning.
2. The bathroom
UltraGrime® Anti-Bac Clothwipes are the essential tool for tackling a bathroom deep clean! The enormous size of these Clothwipes, and their ability to retain moisture, makes them ideal for cleaning large surfaces such as the bathroom floor, the bath, shower doors, mirrors, and more.
Declutter and dust
Before you start scrubbing, it’s best to get rid of all the items sitting on your shelves and in the shower, while you should also throw used towels and bath mats into the washing machine. We then recommend you dust every light fixture, window sill, and your exhaust fan – by doing this first, you’re ensuring your floor doesn’t get covered in dust just as you’ve finished cleaning it!
You can rely on UltraGrime®
Although your bathroom may look clean, it’s important to clean this room at least once a week as just one flush of the toilet can spread bacteria and germs on surfaces up to 6 feet away. With their powerful germ-killing ability, Anti-Bac Clothwipes are the ideal solution for wiping down the bathroom walls, the toilet, and everything in between. Bursting with a pleasant citrus scent, using these Clothwipes will leave your bathroom smelling and looking refreshed.
Don’t forget to disinfect any taps or handles found within your bathroom, as these can be some of the germiest places found within the home.
Top tip: To clean your showerhead, we recommend placing this in a bucket of white vinegar, as this is a natural disinfectant and a brilliant tool for cleaning! Once soaked for 30 to 60 minutes, you should remove the showerhead and scrub off any remaining limescale before reattaching to the hose.
3. Living room and dining room
The living and dining rooms are likely where you spend most of your time, and where you socialise with family and friends. To revitalise these rooms and make them feel more inviting, it’s important to complete a frequent deep clean.
Revitalise your dining room
For the dining room, we recommend wiping down the dining table and vacuuming up any crumbs after each meal, while making sure to take care of any spills immediately to avoid stains. You should also consider thoroughly vacuuming or mopping your floor on a weekly basis, while dusting any decor, furniture, or light fixtures.
When carrying out a deep clean of your dining room, you should consider cleaning your windows, washing or dry-cleaning your curtains, and deep cleaning your carpets or rugs.
Spruce up your living room
When it comes to your living room, we encourage you to follow similar steps to deep cleaning your kitchen; start by decluttering any tables or shelves, and follow a process where you clean from top to bottom.
Once the room is clear of clutter, we recommend you dust down the ceiling and corners of the wall, followed by any frames, TVs, light fixtures, tables or shelves. Afterwards, consider taking down any curtains or blinds and washing them thoroughly – by not doing this, there may be a build up of dust which can aggravate any allergies that your family members may have.
Once done, you should take this time to deep clean the inside and outside of your windows as although they may look clean, they can become a breeding ground for bacterial colonies if not dealt with regularly, and can even lead to airborne diseases and pathogens spreading.
You should end your deep clean by focusing on your carpets and rugs. To start, you should give them a thorough vacuum before sprinkling a preferred carpet cleaner or baking soda on the surface. Using a bucket of dish soap and warm water, grab a cloth or sponge and gently scrub your carpet or rug before leaving them to air dry. Once dry, you should vacuum these areas again to ensure any additional dirt or dust is picked upTop tip: Dust, dirt, pet hair, and crumbs can all accumulate under furniture, which is why it’s important to move your chairs, tables and other furnishings to ensure your living room is thoroughly cleaned. Moving furniture while cleaning will also reduce the risks of discoloration in your carpets and rugs.
4. The kitchen
The kitchen truly is a paradise for germs and bacteria to spread, thanks to the array of raw meats, unwashed fruits and vegetables, and dirty appliances typically found in this busy space.
With it being one of the dirtiest rooms in the home, check out our dedicated deep cleaning kitchen blog which provides a list of top tips to really give this room a thorough clean.
Top tip: Make sure you don’t forget the small details – door handles found throughout the kitchen can have more bacteria than a toilet seat! While deep cleaning your kitchen, we recommend wiping down these areas with a Clothwipe to kill at least 99.99% of the lurking bacteria.
