How to clean a BBQ in 5 simple steps

July 29, 2022

When it comes to a British summer, we’re well aware that sunny days and warmer temperatures can often be scarce. That’s why it’s crucial to seize the opportunity and maximize the better days when they appear – whether it’s spending time in the garden, soaking up the sun, or, of course, firing up the BBQ. Additionally, let’s not forget to address the importance of knowing how to clean your BBQ effectively to ensure a delightful grilling experience.

It’s time to get the old grill cleaned up for a summer of family get-togethers, garden parties, and outdoor feasts! If your ‘barbie’ is in need of some serious elbow grease, we’ve shared our step-by-step guide on how to clean a BBQ after winter, using our superior XXL+ BBQ Clothwipes

Step 1: Disconnect and detach your BBQ

Once you’re all set up in an area outside, it’s important to disconnect the gas of your BBQ before detaching the different parts, ready for a good clean. If it’s possible, remove the grill grate to make the job a little easier and less fiddly. The more pieces and parts you can remove, the easier it will be to clean them.

Step 2: Remove excess fat and grease

Now it’s time to really get to work! Stubborn grease on a BBQ can put anyone off the cleaning process but instead of scrubbing and soaking, we have just the solution for you.

Our tough abrasive Clothwipes are perfect for cleaning both sides of the grill to eliminate old grease and fat from your BBQ. The rough side of our wipes allows you to tackle old burnt-on grease and grime with ease, while the softer side goes the extra mile in getting your BBQ and utensils sparkling clean.

It may seem like you’ll need to use harsh chemicals and intense cleaning products for a job this grimey, however, our BBQ Clothwipes have been carefully designed to be kind to skin yet tough on grease – so they can be used on any surface without the need to look out a pair of rubber gloves!

Step 3: Clean all other parts of your BBQ

Now that the hardest part is out of the way, you can begin cleaning all the other parts of your BBQ, such as the hot plates, char grill plates, flame diffusers, warmer racks – and don’t forget to clean the outside of the lid and cook box!

Of course, our BBQ Clothwipes are also ideal for cleaning every part of your BBQ as well as removing old grease. With their XXL+ size, they have a large absorbency capacity for getting every element cleaned, and the ability to stay wet for over 60 minutes so you can maximise your cleaning with less waste.

If you use a coal BBQ, remove any leftover ash from the base of the grill, as a build-up of ash can obstruct the vents at the bottom of the grill, which makes it harder to control the temperature while cooking. If possible, remove the charcoal grate at the base to make it easier for removing all the ash and getting your ‘barbie’ restored to its former glory.

Step 4: Add a layer of protection

Once you’ve cleaned all of your BBQ parts and utensils, we recommend spraying both sides of the grill with cooking oil to keep them protected from rusting or burning once the cooking has gotten underway. Another tip would be to line your drip tray with foil and fat absorber to prevent any fires and to keep it easy to clean after your next grilling session.

Step 5: Reassemble

By this point, your BBQ should be immaculate and ready to reassemble! If you use a gas BBQ, connect it back up to the gas, season the hot plates, and turn it on for 15 mins to burn off any product which may still be on it. Then you’re good to go with cooking up an al fresco feast for your next garden party or get-together.
