How to deep clean your kitchen

August 1, 2023

The kitchen is one of the busiest rooms in the home – and also the dirtiest! This space, where families come to cook, eat, and socialise every single day, just so happens to be the best friend of bacteria, as kitchens are home to a number of factors that encourage germs to spread, such as heat, moisture and food.

From raw meats to unwashed fruits and vegetables, the kitchen is a germ’s paradise! That’s why it’s important to deep clean your kitchen at least four times a year. In this blog, we’ve pulled together a list of top tips that, along with a little help from UltraGrime® Anti-Bac Clothwipes, will help you keep your kitchen clean and safe.

1. Declutter!

This one is obvious – you can’t deep clean your countertops and floors if they’re covered in clutter! The first step is to remove mess – is your kitchen island covered in piles of outdated mail? Are your cupboards, fridge or pantry full with old or expired goods? We encourage you to get rid of unused and unnecessary items responsibly, then it’s time for deep cleaning.

2. Clean from top to bottom

When deep cleaning your kitchen, it’s best to plan strategically as by cleaning from top to bottom, this ensures dust or crumbs that fall during the process will get cleaned up later. This means starting with light fixtures, then cupboards, countertops, sinks and taps, and finally the floor.

At first, deep cleaning your entire kitchen may seem like a daunting, time-consuming task. Luckily, UltraGrime® Anti-Bac Clothwipes are made with a fabric that is resistant to rips and tears meaning that one Clothwipe will go a long way. Plus, they’re guaranteed to stay wet and usable for over an hour!

3. Deep clean your appliances

When was the last time you cleaned your refrigerator, dishwasher or oven? More than 70 species of bacteria can be found in a dishwasher which is why it’s recommended you clean it at least once per month, whereas your fridge and oven should be deep cleaned every 3-4 months.

We recommend using specialised cleaners for both the oven and dishwasher. The refrigerator’s vegetable tray is said to be one of the germiest places in a kitchen, which is why you should rely on UltraGrime® Anti-Bac Clothwipes which are certain to leave your fridge smelling and looking brand new!

4. Scrub your sink and taps

Did you know that kitchen sinks are home to over 17,000 bacteria per square inch, while a further 13,000 can be found around the taps? Experts say that the kitchen sink should be deep cleaned at least once per week!

With their powerful germ-killing ability, our Anti-Bac Clothwipes are the perfect tool to get rid of the nasty germs lurking in your sinks and taps.

5. Disinfect countertops

According to a recent study, your kitchen countertops can have up to 18x more bacteria than a pet’s food bowl! Although they may look clean, it’s still very important to give your countertops a thorough wipe down before you start preparing food, and after you have finished cooking – especially if you have been using poultry or eggs.

Due to their size and large absorbency capacity, our Anti-Bac Clothwipes are the ideal tool for ensuring your countertops are free from nasty bacteria! Designed to eliminate cross-contamination, just one of our Clothwipes can be enough to clean all of your kitchen worktops.

6. Look out for small details

Do you know how dirty your appliances can actually be? Recent findings may just shock you…

  • Refrigerator handles may have 18x more bacteria than a remote control
  • Dishwashers handles may have 1,392x more bacteria than a child’s hand
  • Oven handles may have 4,550x more bacteria than a toilet seat

This is why it’s so important to look out for the small details when deep cleaning your kitchen – remember, just because it looks clean, doesn’t mean it is!

7. Revive your stained chopping boards

We’re all guilty of using stained chopping boards for a little longer than we should have – while deep cleaning your kitchen, you should use this as the perfect opportunity to spruce up your boards! A neat trick is to grab half a lemon, or a cloth soaked in lemon juice, and give the boards a good scrub as the citric acids work as a natural bleaching agent that can tackle the toughest of stains.

Afterwards, leave your chopping boards to rest overnight before giving them a clean as normal and you should see a BIG difference. If you’re not keen on wasting lemons, then just grab an Anti-Bac Clothwipe; packed with citrus scents, these Clothwipes are guaranteed to freshen up your chopping boards that are looking a bit worse for wear.

8. Empty and clean the bin

A hotspot for unwanted bacteria, can you remember the last time you thoroughly cleaned your kitchen bin? You should aim to clean your bin at least twice a week after you have emptied them.

After throwing out the bin bag responsibly, we recommend wiping down both the lid and the bin with an Anti-Bac Clothwipe which will ensure the unpleasant smell of outdated food is replaced by bursts of fresh citrus. If your bin is in particularly bad shape, then use a hose or shower to loosen off the worst of the grime before using UltraGrime® Clothwipes to finish the job!

We recommend leaving your bin out to dry in the sun, which will reduce the risk of any mould spreading.

9. Reorganise cupboards and pantry

While deep cleaning your kitchen, you should use this opportunity to quickly spruce up your pantry. As you’re cleaning your shelves, make sure you’re checking expiration dates of your goods and say goodbye to those that have been lurking around for a bit too long.

An organised pantry will work wonders when it comes to cooking, as you’ll know exactly where to find the ingredients you’re searching for! Our top tips include grouping like minded items together using baskets or jars, and to use your eye-level shelves for the most essential items.

10. Deep clean floors

After your kitchen has been thoroughly deep cleaned, your floor might be looking a little messy with crumbs and dust that have fallen from the countertops and shelves above.

A quick hoover followed by a wipe down with UltraGrime® Anti-Bac Clothwipes will ensure your kitchen floor is gleaming and looking as good as new!
